At the far west end of 22nd Street/Pinya Road (aka C Road), the waterside Buffalo Point is a good spot from which to watch water buffalo hauling hardwood logs floated down the Shweli and the Ayeyarwady rivers from the north – especially picturesque at sunset.

For a break from the mayhem of downtown, head west along 26th Street (Bayintaung Road) to reach the riverfront, where you can while away an hour or two watching cargo boats unloading at the jetties. A marvellous view extends across the Ayeyarwady to Sagaing and the Mingun hills, on the river’s west bank, studded with pagodas and monasteries.

South Mandalay

The trip out to Amarapura and Sagaing leads through the densely packed districts of south Mandalay, where it’s worth pausing to admire the city’s most important religious complex, the Mahamuni Pagoda, the fascinating craftworkers’ quarter surrounding it and the splendidly atmospheric Shwe In Bin monastery.
